Our mission is to restore the Wôpanâak language within the Wampanoag Nation as a vital expression of our birthright and spiritual interconnectedness. Reclaiming our language nurtures intergenerational healing and deepens our bonds with the land, waters, creatures, and each other. Through language reclamation, we exercise our sovereignty, empower our community to embrace our Ancestors' wisdom and strengthen our Wampanoag identity.
Your support this Giving Tuesday, December 2nd enables us to promote intergenerational healing through cultural restoration by expanding language classes, producing accessible and culturally-based educational materials, and creating more immersive learning experiences. Together, we can strengthen this remarkable journey of language restoration honoring the past while nurturing a vibrant future. Please consider a Giving Tuesday donation today to help bring the Wôpanâak language back to the community.
This sacred message was given to jessie 'little doe' baird in Wôpanâak (Wampanoag language) during the same dream for three nights in a row. During the dream she saw the same circle of faces...faces of her ancestors. At that time, she knew nothing of her people's language but little doe wondered if the words were in Wôpanâak, the language of her ancestors.
"We are here..."
Thus began a journey that, through the joint collaborative efforts of the Mashpee, Aquinnah, Assonet & Herring Pond Wampanoag communities, led to the birth of the Wôpanâak Language Reclamation Project (WLRP), a project that, after more than 150 years of dormancy, is bringing back to life the tribes' sacred privilege and right - our ancestral language.
